First release: August 28, 1992
This release: December 21, 1992
This is a standalone BBS program to play a Role Playing Game. It is a very
addicting game to those people who are familiar with D&D style of play.
User interaction, mixed with intelligent computer opponents, makes this BBS
unique and popular to call. Everyone gets tired of message bases,
networks, nodes, file uploads & downloads. Most people want fun from their
computers. Why not play games with other people? Let your keyboard be
your joystick and your modem be your game cartridge! Go kill a monster or
another user. Joust for gold and glory. Rob another user. Pick pockets
in the Square. Buy a naval warship and hunt sea monsters or sink another
user's ship. Create a gang of users to party against another gang or the
fearful Monster Mash. Drop into a dungeon and explore your way to
adventure. Or, drink beer in the Tavern and start a brawl amongst the
other players. Sure, there is even E-mail and a message base for
communicating and posting, but the real fun is beating up players, taking
their possessions, and hoarding gold! This demo version is fully playable.
The only difference is that you become Immortal upon reaching level 30
instead of level 100. Levels 31-99 are v-e-r-y interesting as magic users
become more powerful and fighting classes get tougher.
There is ONLINE documentation in the Help & Hints section. Read them all for
game play instructions!!!
Sysops can access their menu from the pulldown option Sysop or Right-Amiga-S.
From remote locations, King and Queen level users can type an @ at the Main
Menu to get into the Sysop menu. Access levels determines the user's ability
to use the game features. For example:
<1> Visitor 2-calls, 10-minutes. Default access to NEW users.
<2> Stranger 2-calls, 10-minutes. Assign this to users you are having
problems verifying.
<3> Prisoner 2-calls, 5-minutes. Assign this to any user you don't
want playing the game.
<4> Serf 2-calls, 20-minutes. Assign this to novice players.
<5> Squire 3-calls, 15-minutes. Any Serf who reaches the 3rd level
gets promoted to a Squire.
<6> Knight 3-calls, 20-minutes. Any Squire who reaches the 10th
level becomes a Knight. Knights may start a gang.
<7> Baron 3-calls, 25-minutes. Any Knight who becomes Immortal
becomes a Baron.
<8> Earl 3-calls, 25-minutes. Any Baron who becomes Immortal
becomes an Earl.
<9> Duke 3-calls, 25-minutes. Any Earl who becomes Immortal
becomes a Duke.
<10> Sheriff 3-calls, 30-minutes. Reserved special status.
<11> Princess 3-calls, 30-minutes. Reserved special status.
<12> Prince 3-calls, 30-minutes. Reserved special status,
<13> Queen 3-calls, 30-minutes. I gave this status to my wife. She
lets me rule when she says so!
<14> King 3-calls, 30-minutes. The sysop. User #1. Make sure.
RPGBBS can run using any Commodore Amiga hardware configuration with a
Hayes compatible program. Among hardware tested, an Amiga 3000 under
WB2.04 and a Supra2400, SupraFAX 14.4, and a Practical Peripherals 9600
modems were used. RPGBBS supports 99 levels, 127 users, 31 gangs. The
demo version only 29 levels, 8 users, 2 gangs and 29 levels of play. The
message bases hold a specified amount of messages. The software multitasks
very well, as it is event-driven and demands very little CPU power at a
clip. The program was written in SAS/C v6.1 (the only language for Amiga!)
To configure RPGBBS:
Copy the Venus font to your System FONTS directory. This font is necessary
for the local, custom screen.
Copy noisy.library to your System LIBS directory. Any IFF file called
Chat.snd will be played whenever a user requests chat. Press the ESCape
key to toggle chat mode.
RPGBBS.hof file contains Hall Of Fame information for top-notch users. If
this file does not exist, a new one gets created.
RPGBBS.license file contains Registered User information. Software will
not run if this file is not present or contains invalid information.
RPGBBS.system file is updated when RPGBBS is taken offline. The file
contains the following lines:
1. Last date RPGBBS was taken offline
2. Total logins to date
3. Last Caller #1
4. Last Caller #2
5. Last Caller #3
6. Border message
7. Caller stats (Sun-Sat)
8. First Bulletin Message on disk , Next Bulletin Message to store
A User and Gang file gets created and initialized if they do not exist in
the directory RPGBBSdemo gets booted from.
Config program is used to customize the features and game play of RPGBBS.
Please note, if you add or delete a character class, you MUST change the each
dungeon monster character class to reflect the new character class number. For
example, if you delete the Alchemist class, all classes above 1 move back 1. A
global change routine will have to be written to correct this automatically.
Be careful when 'tinkering' with the default values. The game is somewhat
balanced with the original values. It is very easy to make a character class
too powerful or too weak. Reflect any of your changes in the Help files for
the users to read.
A good customization would be to change the poison names. Type I, II, etc. is
ok, but I would like to see a list like Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac, etc. Also,
the dungeon monster picture files need to be completed.
